In line with EU Directives, Ireland introduced legalisation that provides for:
- Competition in the generation and supply of electricity
- An independent transmission system operator (TSO) – Link to Eirgrid later down in the page.
- An independent distribution system operator (DSO)
How Electricity Gets to the Customer
Electricity is generated at power stations (powered by Natural Gas, Coal, Oil or Windpower). It is transported over High Voltage Transmission Lines, called the National Grid (owned by ESB and operated by Eirgrid), and distributed through a series of sub stations, transformers, low voltage circuits and meters (all owned and operated by ESB ).
